Did you know that in my past life I was a director of a traveling teen summer program?
I was given no specific budget and told to plan a meaningful 6-week traveling program for a group of teens. That was all the direction I got.
I ran with that vague description and added my own sparkle 💫 making it eco-friendly with backpacking trips and organic farming, and stepped it up in the volunteer department by not only hitting up the local food pantries for volunteer opportunities, but also creating a free summer camp in a poor neighborhood in Savannah, GA and helping build Earthships in Taos, NM.
This teen program was EXCEPTIONAL and I say that without even a little bit of doubt in my mind.
It was EXCEPTIONAL because I had so much damn fun working on it and creating it which in turn had my creative juices overflowing. Like I literally couldn’t turn off the faucet of ideas coming through me.
Every day I would go into my home office and ask myself:
What else can I plan for this program that would over deliver to my teens?
Because I was feeding my brain high quality stellar questions and because I was seeking out the JOY of putting this program together, my brain would go to town for me rattling off a million outrageously amazing ideas like:
💜Rent out the local vegan restaurant in Brattleboro Vermont and surprise the kids with dinner and a talent show where all funds go to the local food pantry.
💜Volunteer on a Native American reservation and have the chief of the reservation and a cool rabbi come speak to the kids sharing how our cultures are similar.
💜Organize taking the young adults from the center of the blind to a baseball game where your teens are in charge of sharing and describing exactly what is happening on the field to their “buddy”.
Man, I was having the time of my life. 🎉
I learned early on in my career that plugging back into joy and playfulness is the ONLY business plan you need to have in order to be successful.
And why is this true?
Because Joy and playfulness invites you back in over and over again with its high energy and buzzing dopamine hit to the body and this is the exact sexy thang that you need to create consistency in your business.
I know the world is constantly telling you: “ You need to show up consistently in order to succeed.” And they aren't lying. This is true. But what they forgot to tell you is that consistency is just a symptom of what’s happening deep underneath the surface.
It’s like watching a healthy cherry tomato plant take over the garden with it’s juicy beautiful red cherry tomatoes. Why is that happening? Because she is getting just the right amount of sunshine, rain and healthy soil to grow and thrive. The cherry tomato plants that don’t get either enough sunshine, rain or healthy soil shrivel up and stop showing up.
We too need the right amount of nourishing soil, aka: rest, belief in ourselves, joy in what we are doing, desire to grow more because it’s fun etc., in order to want to come back over and over again to feed our businesses and the only way we will have that desire is if we are having fun and riding on that dopamine hit we get when things are just damn fun!
As adults, we have an unspoken time limit to how long we have to be joyful and playful with our lives. Especially when it comes to things as “serious” as our businesses. Yea, I decided I wanted to change that rule up. And I want to help you change that up so that showing up consistently to your beautiful business, who is patiently waiting for you to show up, is not something that you have to willpower your way through but actually something you feel a great honor as well as delight in doing.
